The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) has recommended reforms in national and state policies to improve the business environment for small enterprises and create a competitive MSME ecosystem. In a paper titled ‘Ease of Doing Business in the Indian States: Deregulation for Business to Prosper’, Assocham identified regulatory barriers in building and construction laws, environmental regulations, labor laws, and logistics rules that hinder the growth of MSMEs.
Manish Singhal, Assocham’s secretary general, emphasized the need for tailored interventions at the state level to address region-specific challenges. The paper highlighted best practices in states like Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, which have streamlined approval processes for MSMEs.
Assocham also called for reforms in environmental regulations to ensure accurate classification of industries and simplify approval processes. The industry body proposed expanding the scope of non-polluting industries and strengthening the single-window system for online submissions.
