Yesterday, in the bi-annual election for the solitary Member of Legislative Council (MLC) from the Hyderabad Local Authorities Constituency within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), a staggering 78.57% voter turnout was recorded. Among the 112 registered voters, 88 chose to cast their ballots at the two designated polling stations located at the GHMC headquarters. Of the 112 voters, 31 were ex-officio members, with 22 of these individuals utilizing their right to vote. Out of the total 81 GHMC corporators, 66 exercised their democratic privilege.

The election saw a fierce competition between Dr N Goutham Rao of the BJP and Mirza Riyaz Ul Hassan Effendi of the All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). The ruling Congress party chose not to field a candidate, while the opposition BRS urged its corporators to abstain from voting. The ballot boxes, safeguarded by security personnel, were transported to a reception center and safely stored within a strong room. The count of votes will take place tomorrow.
